- The Seacrest is a good old-fashioned love story with an ending that will make your heart swell with joy. ;o)
2. If you had
the chance to live the life of one of the characters of your book, then which
one would it be?
- I must say, if I could be Libby’s older brother, living on Cape Cod in a mansion by the sea, riding horses all day, seeing to the properties, gardens, and such… wow. What a life that would be. Maybe I could even have time to write a sequel to The Seacrest!
- I’ve always written mysteries with romantic themes woven into the stories. When I completed my 20th book, I thought… why not try something different? I’d been craving Cape Cod for nine long years, and knew I’d be there this past summer to get more local color for the story. Somehow, it just grew in my heart and voila! There it was!
- I start with a vague idea of a story line and setting. I start to develop the characters in my head, jotting down key items about their appearance, their troubles, their pasts. Then I just let the story flow out of me. I don’t outline or plan details, it’s all sort of like watching and recording a movie that just spews from my brain. The characters take over.
5. Tell us
about your inspiration and how it motivated you to become a writer?
- When my father died in 1997, I kind of lost it. I needed something to help me through the grieving process, since I had lost seven other friends and family during the previous five year period. I was rather broken at that point, and writing (which I’d always wanted to do) gave me the therapy I needed. I dedicated my first mystery series to my father, who is very much like my protagonist, Gus LeGarde. ;o)
6. Describe
yourself in 3 words.
- Seriously? Do you know how hard that is for a writer? Even harder than writing a book blurb! Okay, okay. I’ll try.
- Passionate, obsessive writer.
- Or…
- Husband, father, grandfather.
- All right, I’ll stop now! ;o)
7. Any secret
or fact about you that will surprise your readers and others as well?
- I go to bed at 8:00 and get up at 4:00 AM. I know, I know! It’s crazy! But I like to write in the dark, silent house in the morning, sitting with my dogs in front of the woodstove. It’s great!
8. Three most
important things that an amateur writer must keep in mind while writing his
first book.
- As I describe in my three volume writing guides called Write Like the Wind, I recommend that all writers just let the story out before they agonize over editing. “Write Like the Wind” means just that.
- Read the work aloud and try to make it sound as natural as you can. If it sounds like you talk, you’re getting close!
- Put yourself in the body and mind of your characters. Feel deeply, use all your senses. You want your readers to feel like they are “there,” in the scene with your characters. ;o)
9. How do you spend
your leisure time except for writing? Are you into sports?
- I love to garden, take photos, hike the hills, read, cook for the family, and I especially love to cross country ski on the fields near our house when we have enough snow!

- To Kill a Mockingbird, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, and The Empty Copper Sea.
